Persistent Inner Tension

When It Becomes Difficult to Relax

Stress is a natural response to challenging life circumstances, increased demands, uncertainty, or prolonged emotional pressure.

However, when stress continues for a long time, it can become increasingly difficult to recover your energy, feel calm, and truly rest. Over time, you may develop a persistent sense of inner tension, as though your body is constantly preparing for potential difficulties or threats.

Many people describe this experience by saying: “I can't relax.” “I always feel on edge.” “My mind never stops worrying.” “I feel tense all the time.” Others say: “I’m constantly under pressure.” “I can’t switch off and rest.” “It feels like I’m always waiting for something bad to happen.”

Working with a psychologist can help you better understand what is happening, reduce emotional tension, and gradually restore a greater sense of inner stability and safety.

How Stress and Inner Tension Can Manifest

Stress and inner tension can affect people in many different ways.

For example:
• persistent fatigue;
• difficulty relaxing and resting;
• a constant feeling of tension in the body;
• irritability;
• heightened anxiety;
• feeling unable to stop thinking;
• constant overthinking and mental rumination;
• difficulty concentrating;
• sleep disturbances;
• a strong need to stay in control;
• feeling unable to fully relax even during time off;
• constant alertness;
• feeling as though your body remains in a state of readiness even when there is no real danger.

If several of these experiences feel familiar and have been present for a prolonged period, psychological support may be helpful.

Inner tension often becomes so familiar that people stop noticing it and begin to see constant stress as a normal part of life. Meanwhile, the body continues to use its resources, which can gradually lead to emotional exhaustion, irritability, and chronic fatigue.

When Counselling May Be Helpful

Psychological support may be helpful if stress and inner tension begin to affect your emotional well-being, relationships, ability to work, or overall quality of life.

For example, if you find it difficult to relax even in calm situations, switch off anxious thoughts, recover your energy after rest, or experience a lasting sense of inner calm.

You may also benefit from counselling if you experience persistent tension, emotional exhaustion, irritability, sleep difficulties, a sense of losing control, or a feeling that your body is constantly in a state of heightened alertness. Many people describe this experience by saying: “I can’t relax.” “I always feel on edge.” “I can’t switch off my thoughts.” “I feel tense all the time.” If these experiences feel familiar and continue to affect your daily life, psychological support may help you better understand the causes of chronic stress, reduce inner tension, and develop healthier ways of coping with emotional pressure and uncertainty.

Working with a psychologist can help you better understand the causes of stress and inner tension, restore emotional resources, and gradually regain a greater sense of balance, resilience, and emotional well-being.

How the work is structured

During counselling, we explore not only the current symptoms of stress and inner tension, but also the life circumstances, beliefs, emotional experiences, and habitual ways of responding to difficulties that may be contributing to and maintaining these patterns.

Over time, it becomes possible to better understand your personal stress responses, identify sources of tension, develop more effective ways of coping with challenges, and restore a greater sense of inner balance and emotional resilience.

In my work, I use methods and techniques from existential therapy, together with elements of Gestalt therapy, Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and psychodrama.
